Something every planner, architect, engineer, and non-LA resident should know:

Ice Cube studied architectural drafting during his NWA years.

Sometimes I forget why I wanted to be a planner. When I started, the only part of planning that I believed to be valuable was having the ability to convert what was existing (or blighted) into something beautiful, resourceful, and generate $$$$$$. Then I learned that you need to start off HAVING $$$$$ (become a developer) to become what I idealized a planner to be. Redevelopment once had the power to do this in cities… The Gaslamp District, Downtown Pomona, Belmont Shores are all places funded by redevelopment monies (tax increments) that I personally love going to (getting fucked up at). How will the elimination of agencies affect the upkeep of these places? My theory is that many cities will go into bankruptcy, forcing all major developments to be privately funded… meaning that Rick Caruso and “The Americana” like projects will take over California.

Anyways, Pacific Standard Time’s Performance & Public Art Festival is January 19th-29th showcasing restagings/reinventions of California artists between 1945 and 1980. I think I foresee a Hybrid Thursday.
